SMARTCAN STUDY
Smartphone Assessment of Medicinal Cannabis Use among People Living with HIV

The SMARTCAN Study aimed to explore the feasibility of using a smartphone app to examine medicinal and recreational use of cannabis among people living with HIV. Many people living with HIV use cannabis to manage symptoms they experience and report that cannabis is helpful for providing symptom relief. However, many people with HIV also use cannabis for non-medicinal reasons. It is unclear if people with HIV experience different outcomes from their cannabis use depending on whether they are using for medicinal or recreational reasons. The SMARTCAN Study asked participants living with HIV to track their cannabis use for medicinal and nonmedicinal reasons using a smartphone app to determine if this method can be feasible for distinguishing between medicinal and nonmedicinal cannabis use and outcomes. This study was funded by a grant from the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network.
